The most common excuse people tell themselves about relaxation is that they don’t have time. Even when we do take time to “relax”, there is no silence, no rest, no real moments of peace. We relax with our cellphone still at our finger tips or Netflix streaming for hours on end. When was the last time you took even just a minute to yourself? Even now, you’re reading this blog. Do we really ever relax? I’ve started to sink deeper within myself as I go about my daily life. I notice this tension in the muscles at the base of my neck, the strain between my shoulder blades and a knot in my lower back that never seems to go away. In the last couple days, I’ve been practicing yoga for about an hour each morning or night, hoping to relieve some of this tension my body is holding.
It is only in moments I take to truly soften these spots and release the tension, that I realize I am the one holding onto tension in my life. Graduating university, looking for a career I want to pour myself into, even considering where I want to live, cause me to carry this weight. I’ve been so worried and anxious about the future, that it started to control the way I held my body. There is no doubt we carry ourselves differently when we are happy, sad, loved or lonely. When we’re happy, our posture is better, our face more natural, our shoulders relaxed.
What happens if you take moments throughout your day, to bring yourself to this happy posture? Not necessarily a yoga pose, but a yoga mindset. I’ve started taking moments to inhale softness, to allow my body to relax even though I am still alert. Releasing tension and taking myself through the mental processes of meditation, I focus on relaxing each part of my body. Starting with the fingertips, I work my way down to my toes in focused relaxation (the best part is, it only takes a couple moments!). The more we allow ourselves moments of softness and ease, the better we will be at whatever we are doing.
